Photoshop Elements Question... How to separate a person from a photo, and put them in another photo?

Hi, last night on a television program, I saw someone use a software program with which he took his own photographic image out of a group photo, and put it in a photo with his wife and son..

Can anyone out there tell me (I have a Mac,) how to use either Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements to isolate a part of a photo in order to create a new photo with that isolated image being transferred to it ?

Please, if you can, tell me step by step?

Or conversely how would I remove someone from a photo?

Thanks very much..

Ps.. If there is a clear description of this process in some Photoshop site, that would be helpful also.

You need what is called the magnetic lasso tool - look for a lasso like icon. Select this tool, then click on one of the edges of the image you want to extract. Then move your cursor along the outline. Wherever the colour of the image is merging with the background, the selection may become inaccurate - in such places, clidk on the outline of the image you are selecting. A bit of practice will make you an expert.

Once the complete image is selected (you may have to double clidk at the end of the loop), click on copy. Now, go to the place you want to insert this picture and click paste. Before you save or merge this pasted image, you may like to re-size it, which you can do be clicking on the double arrows which appear when you click on the corners.
