What is photoshop?

Is it any different from picasa? What kinds of things can you do with photoshop that you can't do with free programs? Also, is Adobe Photoshop the only Photoshop there is, or is that the popular one I keep seeing questions about and people only refer to it as Photoshop.

Photoshop is image management software, made by Adobe. No free or web-based product comes close to the real thing.

The consumer level version of Photoshop is called Elements. Elements 5 for PC, Elements 4 for Mac are the current versions.

The Pro version in now up to CS3.

The most unfortunate choice of terms I've heard over and over again - here and elsewhere - is "I want to photoshop this or that." etc.

Images aren't "photoshoped," they're adjusted, optimized, enhanced, or manipulated. And Photoshop is the software of choice for anyone who'e really serious about their photography.

Photoshop CS is what many professionals use to edit their photos so it has many capabilities that are useless to the average user. Photoshop is part of the Adobe company and therefore is the only Photoshop there is though many people refer to any photo editing program as photoshop.

Photoshop is the name of software from Adobe for image editing. But photoshopping had became a generic term to mean "editing a photograph."
